Amravati Tour Packages
India is undoubtedly a country worth knowing and entering a fantastic world full of culture and tradition. Although many of its attractions revolve around religion, its beautiful temples will also draw your attention to its palaces and forts, worthy of a story.
So, today in our journey to this incredible country, we will know another fantastic city in this country. The city of Amravati is located in the central part of India in the State of Maharashtra. The origin of its name is connected with the heavenly city from Indian legends, which was the capital of the thunder god Indra. Modern Amravati inherited numerous historical and architectural monuments from past eras.
Amravati, the new administrative capital of the Indian State of Andhra Pradesh, came into existence following the redefinition of state borders between Andhra Pradesh and the newly created State of Telangana. The new town of Amravati takes its name from an ancient village some 10 kilometers away.
The British architecture firm Foster + Partners has been commissioned to design the master plan for the new government complex. There is the design of two key buildings: the legislative assembly and the high court complex and several secretariat buildings, where the state administration offices are located. The 217 square kilometers of farmland along the Krishna River is transformed into a city billed as an urban utopia. When complete, Amravati will not only be the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, but they hope it will also be one of the most sustainable cities in the world. So, let’s go on the travel to Amravati.
All about Amravati
The picturesque town of Amravati in Andhra Pradesh is rooted in a rich Buddhist culture. Dotted with various remains of ancient Buddhist settlements, Amravati is a haven for followers of Buddhism and lovers of history. Located about 35 km from Vijayawada, the city was an ancient Buddhist settlement called Chintapalli. During the reign of the Mauryan king Ashoka, the stupa built here in the 3rd century BC was more significant than the one at Sanchi and had an entrance gate at each compass point. Although all other structures no longer exist, one of the gates was rebuilt and can be seen. The life stories of Lord Buddha are carved on this door.
Tourists can also visit the village of Kondapalli, home to the famous toys made using a 500-year-old process and are known for their bright colors and distinctive features.
Amravati is one of the few places in the country where a river flows north instead of south or east. This is considered a good omen, and well over 2,000 years ago, the Satavahanas chose the site to build their capital in Dharanikota, two kilometers from the city of Amravati. It is located near two well-developed cities: 32 kilometers from Guntur and 39 kilometers from Vijayawada.
When the government of Andhra Pradesh decided to call the proposed new capital 'Amravati,' it was not only to resurrect the name of an ancient political, cultural, and Buddhist capital that was already ahead of its time but also with the hope that the new capital would acquire the name, fame, glory, and grandeur associated with it, retaining its historical significance but reflecting modernity.
The Amravati region is one of the few places in the State where such a large plot of land is available to construct a capital city. As it is close to Vijayawada and Guntur, connectivity is not an issue. Plenty of water is available from the Krishna River for the capital and its residents. The government plans to revive decades-old waterways and canals that connect the capital with many cities in Krishna's Delta.

Temples and tigers in Amravati
Maharashtra is a vast and diverse territory in the central west of the Union, stretching from the misty Gaths Mountains to the Arabian Sea. Strong and proud, its vitality is expressed in great cultural diversity, with impressive festivals, silver sand beaches, and hundreds of temples and sculptures throughout the State.
There is so much to see and do here, like visiting the caves, forts, beaches and shrines, its major cities, learning about its arts and crafts, and enjoying its festivals. Still, today we are focusing on Amravati, one of its districts, during many centuries known as Udumbravati due to the existence of abundant trees called Audumber and cradle of essential leaders of the Independence, Mahatma Gandhi visited Amravati in 1928.
Guarded by the Pohara and Chirodi hills to the east, it has two lakes, Chhatri Talao and Talao Wadali. To know everything about this city, let's start our visit with the Shri Ambadevi Temple; it is in the city's heart, in Gandhi Square.
It is an ancient temple, and pilgrims come here from India. The Navaratri Festival is celebrated here, with joy and harmony for nine days, in a property 1.5 km from Amravati, which is very easy to reach by taxi or from the Badnera station, which is on the railway that connects Madrid. And Calcutta.
Another important temple close to the previous one is Shri Ekviradevi; it is believed that it was built around 1660. It is dedicated to the goddess Devi who incarnates in Shakti during the Naravatri celebration. That is why both temples are united during the festival.
There are other smaller temples like Bhakti, on the road between Badnera and Amravati, with a playground, or Sridham, with beautiful idols and the Janmashthami fair. Still, we must reserve some time to visit the Tigers of Melghat Project in Dharni Melghat, the main port of Maharashtra.
The tiger reserve is located south of the Satpura Hills, whose highest peak is Virat, at 1,178 meters above sea level. This is the primary habitat of the tiger: the dry tropical forest, with abundant water provided by five large rivers. Furthermore, Melghat has been declared the first repository of biodiversity in the State. The area was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1974 and covers 1,677 km2; its core is the Gugarnal National Park, and it is also home to impressive archaeological treasures, such as the Gavilgarh Fort on the plateau and the Chikhaldara Narnala Fort to the southeast, in the serene setting of teak forests.
Chikhaldara
Chikhaldara is a hill station and municipal council in the Amravati district of the Indian State of Maharashtra. The only mountain resort in the Vidarbha region is at an altitude of 1118 m above sea level. This is the area where a lot of coffee is growing in Maharashtra. Chikhaldara is full of deep valleys with velvet mist and majestic trees. Having a wildlife sanctuary with an abundance of wildlife, lookouts, lakes, and waterfalls, it is a top-rated summer destination. Featured in the Mahabharata epic, this is where Bheema killed the evil Keechaka in a Herculean encounter and then threw him into the valley. He thus became known as Keechaka Dara: Chikhaldara is the corruption of him.
The only hilltop location in the Vidarbha region sits at 1118 meters. The highest point of the variant is 1188 meters and has the added dimension of being the only coffee-growing area in Maharashtra. If you want to go to Amravati, October to June is the best month to visit.
It abounds in wildlife, such as tigers, panthers, sloth bears, sambars, wild boars, and rarely seen wild dogs. Nearby is the famous Melghat Tiger Project, which counts 82 tigers. Built initially to supply fresh water to the nearby neighborhoods, the water body is a perfect spot for weekend family picnics. Come for a relaxing setting, water sports, sightseeing, or admire the quiet landscape. There is a small garden with a beautiful zoo. People usually come here on weekends and love to ride a boat.
Undavalli Caves
The Undavalli Caves, carved from single sandstone, are an excellent example of India's cave architectural heritage. The attractive design of the caves speaks volumes about the advanced architectural skills of the ancient architects and temple builders of Viswakarma. The caves are said to have been associated with the influential Vishnukundina dynasty, which ruled over significant parts of India between 420 and 620 AD. These caves are an excellent example of Gupta architecture, and the detailed design of the second floor reflects Chalukyan architecture.
The largest cave is four stories high and houses a massive statue of Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture. The first floor of the caves houses sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras (saints), suggesting that they once served as a home for Jain monks. The first floor walls are covered with fabulous frescoes depicting scenes from mythological stories—the front of the third-floor houses various sculptures, including representations of lions and elephants. Nearby, another cave is exclusively dedicated to Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. The architecture and green spaces around the Undavalli caves will remind you of the Udaygiri caves of Bhubaneswar.
